A metronome for your business

I’ve always advocate that the head of company take on the role of a pacer for the organisation. What does a pacer do? She sets the momentum for the team. She sets a clear goal ahead, and she gears her team towards it but running alongside them, sometimes leading them, sometimes moving to the back to spur those lagging behind.

The situation with the pandemic now demands every leader to embrace this role more than ever. Chances are, there are a lot of uncertainty on the ground, your team may have insecurities about their jobs, or even be demotivated by the situation around us. They may not know how to navigate their BAUs given the current situation.

Like a metronome, the critical role all leaders must play now is to set pace. How slow and deliberated a pace do you want your team to trot along with, or, how fast and focussed do you need them to go now? Your team is looking to you and the cues you set out.

The current situation is worrying and stressful and I am not suggesting that we sweep that all under the carpet. The fact of the matter is that we all still have businesses to run, and we all still want our businesses to sustain beyond this pandemic. Focusing your team with a goal and energising them will not only spur their momentum, it will also help ease some of the insecurities they are feeling.

Set the right pace, focus your teams and this is now the best thing you can do for your business. Good luck with it and keep well.
